Super Touring was a class of touring cars in auto sports, created in 1994 by the FIA. It was intended to replace Group A touring cars.
The 406 met its sporting destiny at the German Super Touring Championship (STW Cup). Laurent Aïello was the official driver, supported by Altfrid Heger, a specialist of the German racing circuits, whose experience would prove very valuable for the entire Peugeot Sport team.
In 1996 Laurent Aïello won two victories and came third in the Championship. 1997 was even better for Peugeot, with the French driver winning the German championship. Behind the wheel of the second car was Jörg Van Ommen.
