Silk Way Rally competitors woke up this morning to find that a big sand and dust storm had swept over Gansu province during the night. The conditions made it impossible for safety helicopters to take off this morning, so the organisers were forced to cancel Leg 11.
♦ The three PEUGEOT 2008 DKRs drove to Jiayuguan via the same 400km route as that taken by the service vehicles. The weather at destination was not much better and Team Peugeot Total was unable to prepare its cars for the following leg. They were consequently covered as the team sat out the storm.
♦ In light of the latest forecasts, and based on information from the Silk Way Rally organisers, Thursday’s Leg 12 looks as though it will take place as planned, although the start will be postponed by one hour. The 666.92km run from Jiayuguan to Alashan incorporates an essentially sandy 425km competitive section which features more dunes.
♦ Peugeot Sport staff will face an early wake-up in the morning tomorrow, in order to make the necessary set-up adjustments to the cars ahead of Leg 12. First on the road will be Stéphane PETERHANSEL / Jean Paul COTTRET in the #100 PEUGEOT 2008 DKR after their stage victory on Tuesday. They will be followed over the start line by Sébastien LOEB / Daniel ELENA (#102) in second position and Cyril DESPRES / David CASTERA (#104) in fourth position. The #104 and #102 crews will be out to defend their positions (1st and 2nd) on the overall leaderboard.
Bruno FAMIN (Team Manager, Team Peugeot Total / Director, Peugeot Sport)
It’s never an easy decision to take when an organiser has to cancel a stage. That can be frustrating for competitors at times, but the main thing is to make sure that no unnecessary risks are taken. We support decisions that are taken in the name of safety.
