In light of the adverse weather conditions over the previous 72 hours in the Kazan region of Russia, the organisers of the Silk Way Rally had no choice but to cancel the second stage of the event between Kazan and Ufa today. This means that the official start of the contest – following yesterday’s short prologue, won by Stéphane PETERHANSEL – has been postponed until tomorrow (Monday).
♦ The organisers of the Silk Way Rally took the decision to cancel the stage during the night, with further heavy rain forecast for this morning – running the risk of helicopters being unable to take off, which might in turn have compromised competitors’ safety.
♦ The three PEUGEOT 2008 DKRs therefore travelled to Ufa by road, via the 558km liaison route intended for support crews. With the cars not having been subjected to the anticipated stresses, the team’s engineers were able to revise their programme for the day, make only a few adjustments and compile a modified job list taking into account the lack of competitive running.
♦ Tomorrow, competitors will be faced with an 815km drive to reach Kostanay to complete the third leg of the Silk Way Rally. In accordance with the classification of the prologue in Kazan, Stéphane PETERHANSEL / Jean-Paul COTTRET will run first on the road through a 200.43km stage made up entirely of dirt tracks. Sébastien LOEB / Daniel ELENA and Cyril DESPRES / David CASTERA will tackle Leg 3 from third and sixth positions respectively.
